- The Société d'Études et de Construction d'Outillage (Construction and Tooling Design Company - Seco) was founded to build and operate France's first high-performance ballast removing and screening machine designed by Maurice Lemaire, a track engineer at the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord (Northern Railway Company) before becoming Minister for Construction and Housing from 1953 to 1955.

- After acquiring Seco and Verstraeten, Desquenne et Giral became a holding company in 1978 under the name Gestion Desquenne et Giral. It concentrated all its rail activities under the name "Seco Desquenne et Giral", which soon became Seco/DG. At the same time, Seco changed its name to "Société d'Entretien et de Construction". The Group carried out a number of takeovers in the 1980s and 1990s. The rail business lines of the acquired companies were gradually merged with Seco/DG.

- As part of the acquisition on July 31 of the rail business of Alpiq Engineering Services, three rail companies specialising in catenary systems joined Colas Rail in continental Europe: Kummler Matter in Switzerland, Elektroline in the Czech Republic and Alpiq Enertrans SPA in Italy. Colas Rail is thus strengthening its position as an international, multi-disciplinary player in the sector.
