Mechelen Rail Bypass project

In 2017, Colas Rail Belgium was awarded a contract for the Mechelen rail bypass project for TUC Rail, which is part of a wider 20-year project for the complete renovation of Mechelen station and for mobility in the surrounding area, led by Infrabel.

The purpose of this project, led by our Belgian teams, is to increase the rail transport capacity of the station by adding tracks with platforms, thereby reducing journey times for connections between Brussels and Amsterdam.

On this project involving multiple business lines, Colas Rail Belgium is responsible for overall management and the inclusion of platform, signalling, catenary and track works.

The scope of works includes:

  • Removal of 2 km of track, catenary and existing signal systems for replacement.
  • Installation of the double track and points and crossings, equipped with the signal system.
  • The existing tracks had to be adapted at night or on weekends to ensure that traffic on the line was disrupted as little as possible.
Unwinding 6 km of catenary, laying foundations building and installing about a hundred overhead line poles.

In addition, cable trays and civil engineering structures were sealed.

The earthworks, platform works and transport were carried out in collaboration with Colas Belgium and the track works in collaboration with the French Colas Rail teams.
